Colleen Hoover’s novels have taken social media by storm. With intense, heart-wrenching writing and well developed characters, it’s no wonder her books are so popular. Hoover worked as a teacher and social worker before publishing her first book, Slammed, in 2012, and becoming a New York Times best selling author overnight. In the past decade, Hoover has published over 20 novels, all which have been featured in a plethora of book clubs and on BookTok, a TikTok based book community. She writes everything from young adult contemporary romance books to psychological thrillers, often merging the two.
Hoover has the capability to make an everyday story into something extraordinary and I believe this is why so many people are drawn to her. Prominent social topics like mental health issues are almost always wrapped into her writing as well, making them especially relevant in today’s times.
Although I tend to stay away from the word, Hoover’s characters are undeniably relatable. It’s easy to connect with the rollercoaster of emotions each character goes through as the plot thickens and relationships unfold. Hoover will make you cry, laugh, and question everything… you won’t be able to put the book down.
Within each plot, there is always a suspense element, so don’t worry if you aren’t a romance person, as her writing is much more than that. Hoover’s books are so easy to read because you’ll always want to find out what happens next. She has a knack for keeping readers at the edge of their seats.
Hoover has three popular series: Slammed, Hopeless, and Maybe. The rest are stand-alone novels you can read in any order. Although some of her books are for ages 18+, she plenty for younger readers as well. When I asked my Instagram followers if they read Colleen Hoover, an overwhelming number said yes and recommended the books Verity and It Ends with Us. Although both are 18+ books, they are must-reads.
